The next time I read The Lord Of The Rings, Peter Jackson's limited vision will leap forward, not my own. the fact remains, I regret seeing the movie.

Great chunks of what makes The Lord Of The Rings what it is, is simply ignored. If you haven't read Tolkien's masterpiece prepare yourself for maybe the best movie experience ever! If you have however. In all honesty it's a good movie, rates between 7 - 8 / 10 but it does trample the legacy of Tolkien by making the rather slow paced book to an action flick with little consern to the characters and their motives. The movie changes a lot (and I do mean a LOT) from the book and that in my opinion is so totally wrong. The "magic" of Tolkien has been lost and replaced by hollywood cliff hangers & lot's of action. Right, the problem here is that while it is an allright movie, it's nothing more than an action adventure movie. The special effects - NOTE TO ALL DIRECTORS - should help develop the storyline of the movie, this movie is a clear example of a movie made to showcase the special effects. The way the director made the characters so one dimensional makes it hard to expect any development of them in the upcoming two movies (who could not guess that Boromir would go after the ring one minute after you see him in the movie). The disrespectful adaptation of the book (Arwen saving Frodo for example) is just the beginning.

They cut an incredible amount of stuff, added a bunch of garbage that Tolkien never wrote and significantly changed many of the parts that they did see fit to leave in. Actually, it's much worse than that - I'm heartbroken. However, it turned out to be a major disappointment. I was very, very excited about seeing the movie. I've read it over 50 times - including once out loud to my daughter when she was a little girl. I read the books for the first time over 30 years ago.

And to be clear, the IMDB reviews from 2001 are mostly positive (there's even a contingent of bad reviews that seem to take offense at how highly rated it was overall) but there was definitely a vocal minority with some hot takes that I could easily see posted today with minor changes to the details. There are a lot of low ratings from people who obviously just aren't into fantasy, but that's beside the point. This is just a selection of the first page or so, focusing mostly on negative reviews from people who self-identify as Tolkien fans. While these platforms were not nearly as big of an influence back then as they have become in recent years, they did exist and since IMDB allows you to sort reviews by date I thought I'd take a look. In another thread, someone mentioned ratings of the Jackson films on audience review platforms compared to ROP.
